Power of Graphite: Insulation with a Performance that Lasts

Power of Graphite: Insulation with a Performance that Lasts

Platinum graphite EPS insulation takes the positive attributes of EPS and makes an even better product with a higher R-value for the same thickness.

Insulfoam Platinum with Neopor is made with a polymer matrix containing graphite, which redirects radiant heat energy like a mirror, increasing Platinum insulation’s resistance to the flow of heat — also known as R-Value.

Insulfoam’s Platinum GPS insulation is designed to maximize insulation performance, while maintaining a light-weight, thin product ideal for use in space constrained areas or colder climates.

Real-world R-Values

ASTM C1363 testing showed that wall assemblies using Platinum GPS insulations provide a significantly higher R-Value.  “ASTM C1363 – Standard Test Method for Thermal Performance of Building Materials and Envelope Assemblies” is a while-wall assembly test that measures the thermal performance of the entire wall assembly.  The test provides a real-world measurement of how different components in a wall assembly combine to provide thermal protection.

Stable R-Values

Thermal drift is when the insulation’s insulating power escapes out of the foam and is replaced by air.  Platinum has long-term stable R-values as it does not suffer from thermal drift.  That’s because Platinum uses air, online foams which use fluorocarbons as an expansion agent and insulation gas.

With Platinum, you start with a high R-value that stays stable, and even increases when it gets cold.

Moisture Management

Insulfoam’s Platinum GPS rigid insulation is vapor-permeable, making it a breathable material. Since water vapor can pass through GPS, the insulation readily releases moisture from walls and foundations. This not only ensures thermal performance for the insulation, but it also helps reduce the potential for any moisture degradation of structural elements.

Independent lab tests compared the moisture release properties of Platinum (1.45 pcf) with XPS (1.9 pcf) insulation in a 2 hour direct water spray (5 gallons per hour, per sf.).  After the water exposure R-Values were recorded using the ASTM C-518 test method tests showed that Platinum retained 100% of its R-Value after 48 hours.

Results showed that Platinum allows water vapor to pass through the product…. releasing moisture from walls and foundations.

Achieve the same R-Values with less

Platinum products can offer a 10-25% material savings compared to XPS insulations.  The unique graphite-enhanced properties create a versatile product that is typically thinner and less dense than XPS.  Platinum’s thinner products save resources, relieve pressure on the environment, and are recyclable (which helps our landfills.).
